The image you linked is of a Remington remake of the M-1911 G.I. The original M-1911-A1 was manufactured by the Springfield Arms company as well as, to a lesser extent, by Colt. Springfield was first in this pistol's mass production, and it annoys pistol buffs when people call the 1911 a "Colt 45" because that's a completely different pistol, in fact a "Colt 45" is a revolver.

The M-1911-A1 originally entered production, predictably, in 1911. Widely used by the U.S. military as a G.I. pistol in a blued or otherwise dark finish, while the occasional Officer would have a nickel plated, or stainless steel constructed variation. The pistol originally used the .45 ACP round, which is the same round used by the Thompson sub-machine gun issued to the U.S. Army during the same era.

In the military, there were two versions, the blued M-1911 G.I., and the brightly polished one that individuals of higher rank could buy, and then carry, rather than use an issued pistol. It was a situation such as this that allowed Patton to have his ivory handled (they weren't pearl, he figured pearl was girly) revolvers while in combat.

The M-1911 was famous for it's steady reliability, and the tendency to knock it's target right off his feet among other things, such as it's many integral safety features.

[OnTOPIc]The weapon has been modeled for Renegade several times, and I'm sure someone knows where a copy of one is.
